How to Reduce Expenditure

Jan 29 05 | 7:50 am

or, “Less classes in more time.”

Basically, the High School is offering a lower amount of classes this year than it was last year. This is compounded by the fact that there will be 8 periods next year. So not only are we going to not have enough class time to be anywhere near prepared for the AP exams (because, let’s face it, kids get 2’s as it is), we get less courses to choose from anyway!

One of the courses that I was actually considering taking was Ancient World History. Mr. Hotchkiss tells us about twice a day how good of a course it was and how it really sets you up to understand World History. However, the course is no longer offered by SWHS. This creates a problem for me, as the only level four Social Studies course remaining is Civics, because I don’t want to take AP Government. This is especially a problem as they have increased the minimum number of credits from 5 to 5.5.

Another course I wanted to take was AP Spanish. It was my understanding that Sr. Kirby was going to teach that next year. There is no AP Spanish or AP French. You just take level 4 year 5 and then the AP exam and hope you’re magically fluent. There’s also not a level 4 Physics. I think this was done because this way they’ll increase the number of kids in AP.

How about yearbook? It’d be fun to make the yearbook.

In other news, despite 5 years of Spanish education, I have just discovered that yes, Spanish DOES have a word for “it”! I was reading Marianela, the syntaxically inconsistant dumbed down version that we have, and I saw an unfamiliar word. I slap it through Google translator, rub my eyes a bit, and am astounded. I ask a Spanish speaker if they’d ever heard of the word, and they hadn’t. A Spanish dictionary site (ie. in spanish) confirmed: “ello” is the word for “it”.

I know, I can’t believe it either.

  1. Oh man, ello? Sweeeet. But isn’t “lo” it, in spanish? Well, it sort of means it…like you’d say damelo, ‘give it to me’, the lo being it. But now there’s actually a word for it, that’s pretty cool.

Oh, and dosen’t one need some kind of civics or government course to graduate at our high school? I also heard a rumor that there was indeed Physics 4 offered next year - it’s just not in the course selection book. I’ll double check with Stead or someone, but I’m pretty sure there is a Physics 4.

  2. I like how Dr. DiIrio became our principal because he was supposed to be some sort of wizard with block scheduling. However, since we got into the school, it’s been nothing but havoc. These schedules don’t make much sense, either. I’m actually pretty glad I’m graduating a semester early.

  6. Oh yeah. It is crap how many courses they cut with the addition of an extra period also, I had Hotchkiss last year and I was getting all geared up for ancient world when I found out it isn’t there. I almost killed Schneider for telling me but 24 was on…
