Beta!

Aug 22 05 | 4:47 am

I went to two more parties today. A youth group bbq, which was fun and had lots of talking about school. Then Owen’s surprise birthday party, which mostly was talking to Caitlin and her friend Hope because I didn’t know most of the East Catholic kids. Four parties in two days. I am popular all of a sudden.

I worked around Globat’s foolishness to get ClassComp2 to a beta phase. This phase is going to test the current implementation of the login system. Once I am sure it works, I am going to tear up the code to add support for multiple schools. I just don’t want to do it all at once and find out that something way back there was broken.

Find bugs. Try to break stuff. Try to hack your way into something. The admin page is admin/admin.php. Try to break into that. Create multiple accounts to make sure comping is working. Suggest features, find spelling errors, find ways to word things better, think of FAQ questions. Post bugs/suggestions/comments/etc in a comment to this post.

ClassComp2. The beta code is 1234. Do not spread this beta. I want to keep this limited to people that visit my blog so they can actually help improve it.

  2. After I register, I get this message:

Thank You Justin! A message has been sent to your e-mail address. Please check it for further instructions on how to active your account. If you do not recieve the e-mail within a couple of minutes, make sure spam filtering is disabled, and click here.

It says, “click here,” but there is no link to click…

  3. Another tip…I know might be hard, but I’ll suggest it anyway (I know absolutely nothing about HTML or anything else internet scripting).

When you go to log in, and it says “username” and “********” for the username and password fields, respectively, is there any way to make the “username” and “********” disappear once you click, so you don’t have to erase it?

I know I’m being a nuisance, but I think it would be a nice touch.

  4. Both those are very good bug finds / suggestions. I do intend to get some javascript to clear those.

  5. ‘click here’ is now a link, and there is javascript to clear the fields.

  6. Alright, cool.

Another tip (now I’m really being annoying, I bet, haha…

When you first enter in you classes, it has a list of pull-down menus so you can select your classes. It doesn’t offer any options for semester classes in this page - you have to leave the field blank and click “submit” so that it’ll give you the option to add your S1 and S2 classes. Maybe you could just give a little heads-up so that people know to do that, otherwise they may get confused…

  7. And one more thing…

Once I had inputted my classes and compared, I clicked on “update user info” on the right, and it brought up the page to update my info. On the top, it says:

    ’s Account

I’m assuming there’s supposed to be something that that will make it say Justin’s Account or something similar…

  8. Yet one more thing…

In the original ClassComp, when you were comparing people’s classes to yours, people’s names were clickable so you could see their schedules. Is there a way you can add that to ClassComp 2?

  9. I promise this is the last question/tip…and probably my most anal one yet…

On the “update user info” field, it says:

Change Password: (leave blank if you do not wish to change your password

    There’s no close parentheses…

Alright, bedtime, so I can get up early and go to camp. Good luck editing; I hope the beta process goes well…

  10. New complaints 1, 2, and 4 dealt with. Complaint 3 is currently an issue I am trying to decide. Should everyone have access to see everyone else’s schedule?

  11. This is Chris. I’ve said it before, make a friends system for class viewing. Let people set if only friends can see their classes or not, and have it set to yes by default. Then people can do the friending, or not, as they like.

  12. I see your point, Greg…maybe you could make it an option within each person’s user settings. They can decide whether or not people can see their schedules. Maybe make it no be default. Regardless of that, people can probably figure out other people’s schedules indirectly, because of the class comparer feature. It would just take a little longer.

  13. Re: your first point: that’s something I was considering as an alternative.

Re: your second point: that’s why I’m not sure it’s worth implementing something anyway. If someone wants your schedule, they’ll be able to get it no matter what.

  14. maybe you could do something with health. It takes half the year, but its every 3 days. The other two i have studyhall. I had to put study hall in the second semester.

  15. This makes me realize something:

Dear myself: you don’t need to assign the classes post fields anything important. They can be arbitrary numbers.

You can add more than one class to the same period by going back to ‘register classes’. Every other day presents a problem though.

  16. i know. well maybe for next year there has to put someway to set variables for each day. I would do it, but im in the middle of coding my own search engine and member system for my site.

  17. Justin, you should be a professional beta tester.

  18. When you finish registering your classes, it says, “You registered [#] classes. Why don’t you see who’s in them?”

Make the text, “why don’t you see who’s in them” a link. I’m too lazy to find it on the navbar.
