A Good Assembly?

Today was an assembly, titled “I am dirt”. Despite our best efforts, Chris and I could find no more information than that it was a one man play about substance abuse, even when we used Google’s blog searching engine. Your guess is as good as mine why Google didn’t hit iamdirt.com, which is the website. I had expected the show to be a rather lame event, similar to what they’ve given us in the past. Either something extremely biased, or told in a way to make it completely incredulous.
Quite the opposite, the presentation was absolutely amazing. John Morello, the performer, hooked you right away with funny characters, and slowly took the show from funny to serious. The last characters were deeply moving, and I think this was the single most effective assembly the school has ever done. This guy was incredible. Even though the characters were talking about how they didn’t think drugs were really that bad, we got to see past their own blindness as to how they were destroying their own lives by choices they didn’t even realize they were making. It was really, really good.
Then robotics was this evening. We organized some more fund raising stuff, then picked leaders of different pre-season teams and split up into them. I was very impressed how everyone who volunteered to lead a team seemed to really be able to lead something. All of the teams were doing something productive, and everyone was listening to them. Hopefully we’re going to have a really produtive year.
There was a Jetblue flight today in California that had it’s landing gear stuck sideways, so it wasn’t going to be able to land normally. They did an emergency landing, and between the pilot’s textbook landing, and the plane not failing (an incredible feat of engineering that the landing gear didn’t just snap off), they landed safely and everyone was able to walk off the plane. Bravo.
ummmm… try googling [”i am dirt” show]. Check out the second, fifth, and sixth results.

I think what happened is I searched it, and when I saw the actual iamdirt.com site, I didn’t look at the URL and just saw the poetry and didn’t think it was the actual show; just some kid angsting in a livejournal. My bad.
