How to almost brick your under-a-week-old iPod

  1. Take 4th gen 20gb iPod black and white
  2. Install latest firmware (2005-10-12) onto iPod
  3. Decide you would like to install iPodLinux on your iPod
  4. Ignore the “The page you are viewing now is two months out of date.” message on the top of the iPodLinux wiki
  5. Ignore the “Warning: The iPod firmware update for 26 June 2005 will not allow you to use iPodLinux.” message on the 4th gen page of the iPodLinux wiki.
  6. Install iPodLinux on your iPod
  7. Watch as your iPod refuses to boot
  8. Discover that the old iPod firmware patcher will not patch back the Apple firmware on your iPod
  9. Tell Greg what happened, and then let him take over:
  10. Mount the iPod in disk mode onto a different computer running the iPod Service.
  11. “Restore” the iPod to working condition!
