I Need a Job

Apr 11 06 | 11:13 pm

or, “Job Applications are Harder than College Applications!”

Today I went out to find myself a way to earn some spending money over the summer. I applied at Best Buy, Circuit City, and Staples. I would prefer to work at a store like these were I can put my employee discount to good use and would at least be interested in the stuff I am selling. It was really hard to come up with references, because I didn’t have any phone numbers with me.

Staples, by far, had the most amusing application. One of the questions was, “How much, in dollars, merchandise have you taken without payment from your employer(s) in the last year?” with answers ranging from “Under $5″ to “Over $1000″. For most of the questions, it was very clear what the ‘right’ answer was. However, a few of the questions were much more grey. A lot of them involved whether or not employees should be fired for different transgressions, and maybe I’m just too forgiving, but I hardly thought any of them were worth outright firing someone.

I’ve never really had a real job before, so I guess this will be exciting. I have been able to get by on a low income, so a computer job here and there and my web design things have been enough for me. But now that I’m going off to college and need to buy lots of food, I need a little stockpile of money. Ramen noodles can stretch it pretty far, but are still not free.

Friday consists of visiting the doctor, hanging with sam, then bowling with a bunch of robot kids. I eagerly await.

  1. I’ve had a job for over 3 1/2 years and I still have almost no money. Also, we are stretching our food through bulk purchases next year! You are welcome to join the pool. :p
