Cyborgs and You!

or, “You Don’t Look Cooler Because You Have Expensive Toys”

I was at Friendly’s tonite with Sam, Tom, Matt, and Kim. We were having fun enjoying our food, when suddenly a woman walks by with a bluetooth headset in her ear. It was one of those particularly small ones, so I might not even have noticed it if not for the blinking light on it. She was just walking around with her cell phone in her ear. Why? Was she expecting an important call?

I was in the doctor’s office yesterday, and I was reading an article in Time about how our generation is “Generation M” where M equals multitasking. Right now, I am writing this blog entry, listening to music, and talking with a few people online. However, that is nothing compared to the kids in this article. They were surfing the net, listening to their iPods, watching TV, talking with many people online, and writing their history essays at the same time. Oh, and they’re like twelve.

I am split. I understand where the people who feel that all of this technology is diminishing the attention spans of kids and making them demand constant stimulation, I think that doing many things at once isn’t inherantly bad. However, these kids need to learn early on how to focus in on one task and complete it. I have no idea how anyone can watch TV and write a decent essay at the same time.

People who wear earbuds when they are talking to you annoy me. People who walk around with bluetooth headsets on annoy me. A little bit of tranquility now and then is a vastly underappreciated thing these days.
