A Pleasant Surprise

Today on PBS’s Newshour they ran a segment about FIRST. At first, I only caught the tail end, and I got to see 201 and 1126 (our alliance partners) pound a ton of balls into the goal while we were on the other side of the field playing defense. When we rewound to watch the rest, there was more fun!

Not only was the video extremely well done, it completely covered all of the ideals of FIRST. They included how on Einstein, one of the alliances gave the other alliance the part they needed to fix their bot, even though they then lost to them. There was a little bit of 177 on the ramp on Einstein, and behind our bot you could see me and Chris in the driver’s station! How cool is that!
They also had some interviews with team 812 members. They won the national Woodie Flowers award, which is amazingly awesome. They interviewed Vu, who was accepted to Olin but is going to MIT instead. I think Christina, who is going to Olin, was in a few frames as well. I met them mostly for the first time at nats, but they were very cool to talk to. I look forward to going to school with (slash near) them next year.

You can watch the video on PBS’s site.

Here’s a frame grab from the video showing Chris and I (and Lynn and Kim a bit) on Einstein.
