I am a Freshman

Colby does a good job summarizing some of Graduation, and his speech is utterly amazing. It was about how everyone at the high school can be “accurately stereotyped” and, while slightly satiric, carried with it a serious message about learning from different peer groups. I really enjoyed it, and he even got interrupted by applause after making a jab at the president. I find it an amazing culture we live in that someone can insult the president of our country during his speech at a high school graduation, and the audience breaks out into applause. It’s absolutely fascinating. To be fair, I was one of the ones clapping.
After graduation was our senior-lock-in substance-free-but-with-a-designated-smoking-area party. It was also very fun, although I got some rug (vinyl?) burn from the inflatable obstacle course they had.
I am currently reading The World is Flat. My brother told me that two nights ago, it was mentioned on the Colbert Report (”This guy is so backwards, he thinks the world is flat!”). In The World is Flat, the author, Thomas Friedman, talks about his daughter who goes to Yale. Last night, at the party, Mark Schneider was there drawing charactatures (how do you spell that word?). He goes to Yale. I told him I was reading TWiF, and he said “Oh, by Thomas Friedman! He has some great ideas.” We were talking about the book for a bit, and then he told me that Friedman’s daughter was in his Hebrew Studies class last semester. Small world! (not a flat one though, Friedman’s thesis has nothing to do with unlikely coincidences).
Tonite was Stefan’s going away surprise party. I gave a lot of people high fives and they complained that they hurt. To be fair, my hand hurt too. But that’s what makes a good high five! It was fun seeing all the juniors seniors, and Stefan is going to Germany Sunday, so I won’t see him again unless he visits or I go to Germany. It was fun having him here, and I hope some day ours paths cross again (aren’t I so sentimental?).
And so the world turns.
I loved The World is Flat. I read it over winter break. When you’re done tell me what you think.

“the world is flat” and “the world turns” might combine for some strange consequences.
