Let’s just say that 1 over 0 is better defined than the contents of this blog.

I go to a geeky school.

Halloween is the annual holiday that encourages people to don all sorts of ridiculous costumes without considering the social stigma that usually accompanies dress up like Michael Jackson. Last year at Halloween, I saw some pretty crazy stuff. We had blue M&Ms, queens, gangstas, and all sorts of variants on the ’scary mask’ theme. However, going to an engineering school as geeky as Olin College has taken it to an entirely new level.

Last night was the Halloween dance slash costume contest. The fact that Olin is only 300 kids makes for some amazing statistics. 2% of the school went as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, 3% went as characters from Serenity, 3% went as characters from Alice in Wonderland, 1% went as the Fanta girls, and 2% went as tetris bricks. These costumes were constructed with the kind of care and duct tape skills that can only come from engineering students. They were simply amazing.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Marc went as a Masterlock. Not only did the wheel work, it was impossible to get the third number.
Pickup Line: "You’re the combination to my heart."

Seven people teamed up and went as every possible tetris block. Not pictured: the good one. Personally, I want to see all the tetris kids take the T into Boston and just walk around in their costumes. There is a video of one guy dressed as an L doing that, but this would be seven times cooler.
Pickup Line: "Wanna clear my row?"

We’ve already killed a DDR pad, but that doesn’t mean it’s entirely useless. Kevin was actually playing DDR dressed as a DDR pad. I wonder if that’s like cannibalism.
Pickup Line: "I bet you know how to push all my buttons"

I think this was the first ever Olin Halloween dance, so theoretically the costumes next year should be even more hardcore. If I want to stand any chance of competing, I’d better get started now.

  1. I’m going to win, even though I’m not going to Olin. My costume of choice: the ohmybod iPod powered vibrator. I’m sure it will be a favorite with the ladies.

  5. This was definitely not the first Halloween dance… There’s been a Halloween dance since I’ve been here and presumably there were a couple before my time too.
