Things that should be avoided:
After being unable, for the 3rd time, to get your crystal oscillator to actually tick so your PIC will actually run in your soldered protoboard instead of a breadboard, shorting 6 AA batteries in series, then screwing your project box back together and not noticing that it is smoking for ten minutes. I’ve never seen batteries get all melty before.
